Understand the Sounds
Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu
Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.
Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.
Short I — "kit" vowel
Nguyên âm ngắn /ɪ/ — như trong "bit", "sit"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is high and slightly forward. Lips are relaxed — not spread wide. Jaw is slightly open. It is a short, lax vowel.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese "i" is always long and tense (like English /iː/). The English /ɪ/ is shorter and more relaxed — do not hold it.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Replacing /ɪ/ with /iː/ — saying sheep instead of ship. This changes the word's meaning entirely.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "bit" — your lips should not be spread wide. If you feel tension in your cheeks, you are producing /iː/ instead.

Long EE — "fleece" vowel
Nguyên âm dài /iː/ — như trong "degree", "achieve"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is high and forward. Lips are spread wide — like a smile. It is a long, tense vowel. Hold it longer than /ɪ/.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Close to Vietnamese "i" — but in English it must be clearly longer and more tense than /ɪ/. The contrast is critical for meaning.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Shortening /iː/ to /ɪ/ — saying ship instead of sheep. In academic contexts, this causes serious misunderstanding.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "see" — your lips should be spread and you should feel tension. Hold the sound for a full beat before moving on.

Schwa — the most common English sound
Schwa — âm phổ biến nhất trong tiếng Anh
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is in the middle of the mouth. Lips are completely relaxed and neutral. It is the weakest, shortest vowel — never stressed.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese has no equivalent. Vietnamese speakers tend to pronounce every syllable clearly — but in English, unstressed syllables reduce to /ə/.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Pronouncing every syllable fully — e.g. saying "ed-u-CA-tion" with a clear "ed" instead of /ə-djuˈkeɪ.ʃən/. This sounds unnatural and robotic.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "about" — the first syllable is /ə/. Your mouth should be almost closed and completely relaxed. If you can hear a clear vowel, it is too strong.

NURSE vowel — "learn" sound
Nguyên âm NURSE — như trong "learn", "research"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is in the middle of the mouth, slightly raised. Lips are rounded but not tightly. It is a long vowel. In British English, the /r/ is not pronounced.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
No direct equivalent in Vietnamese. Speakers often add an /r/ sound or use /ɛ/. The key is to keep the tongue central and hold the sound long.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Pronouncing the "r" in "learn" or "research" (British English is non-rhotic). Also: shortening the vowel — it must be clearly long.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "bird" — hold the vowel for two beats. Your tongue should not touch the roof of your mouth. No /r/ sound at the end (British English).

The national curriculum plays a vital role in shaping the quality of education that students receive. Effective literacy programmes help learners develop the skills they need to succeed in academic and professional life. Research shows that university graduates who have strong discipline and a commitment to further learning are better equipped to contribute to society. Government institutions must invest in pedagogy to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve their potential.
