Block 2 · Understand the Sounds

Khối 2 · Hiểu cách phát âm

Understand the Sounds

Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu

Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.

Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.

/æ/

TRAP vowel — "cat" sound

Nguyên âm /æ/ — như trong "cat", "bad", "damage"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Mouth is wide open. Tongue is low and pushed forward. Lips are spread. It is a short, bright vowel — like a surprised "ah" but shorter.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese "a" is similar but more central. The English /æ/ requires the jaw to drop lower and the tongue to push further forward.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /æ/ with /ɛ/ (as in "bed") — saying "ded" instead of "dad". Or using /ɑː/ — saying "dahmage" instead of "damage".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "cat" — your jaw should drop noticeably. Place a finger under your chin: if it doesn't move down, your jaw is not open enough.

Drill Words — Environment Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Môi trường

damage /ˈdæm.ɪdʒ/ harm or injury / thiệt hại, tổn hại
habitat /ˈhæb.ɪ.tæt/ natural home of an organism / môi trường sống tự nhiên
catastrophe /kəˈtæs.trə.fi/ a sudden disaster / thảm họa đột ngột
/ɑː/

PALM vowel — "father" sound

Nguyên âm /ɑː/ — như trong "carbon", "large", "far"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Mouth is wide open. Tongue is low and back. Lips are relaxed and unrounded. It is a long vowel — hold it for two beats.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Similar to Vietnamese "a" in "ba" but longer and further back in the mouth. Vietnamese speakers often make it too short.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Shortening /ɑː/ to /æ/ — saying "carbon" with a short "a". Also: adding an /r/ sound at the end (British English is non-rhotic).

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "father" — hold the vowel for two full beats. Your tongue should be at the back of your mouth, not the front.

Drill Words — Environment Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Môi trường

carbon /ˈkɑː.bən/ a chemical element; carbon emissions / carbon; khí thải carbon
deforestation /ˌdiː.fɒr.ɪˈsteɪ.ʃən/ clearing of forests / phá rừng
biodiversity /ˌbaɪ.əʊ.daɪˈvɜː.sɪ.ti/ variety of life in an ecosystem / đa dạng sinh học
/ʌ/

STRUT vowel — "cup" sound

Nguyên âm /ʌ/ — như trong "pollution", "flood", "sun"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Tongue is in the centre-low position. Lips are relaxed and slightly open. It is a short vowel — do not hold it.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

No direct equivalent. Vietnamese speakers often use /a/ or /ɔ/ instead. The key is to keep the tongue central and low, not back.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /ʌ/ with /ɑː/ — saying "pah-lution" instead of "pollution". Or using /ʊ/ — saying "poo-llution".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "cup" — your lips should be relaxed, not rounded. The sound is very short. If you feel your lips rounding, you are producing /ʊ/ instead.

Drill Words — Environment Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Môi trường

pollution /pəˈluː.ʃən/ contamination of the environment / ô nhiễm môi trường
flood /flʌd/ an overflow of water / lũ lụt
combustion /kəmˈbʌs.tʃən/ the process of burning / quá trình đốt cháy
/ɒ/

LOT vowel — "hot" sound (British English)

Nguyên âm /ɒ/ — như trong "fossil", "ecology", "toxic"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Mouth is open. Tongue is low and back. Lips are slightly rounded. It is a short vowel. British English only — American English uses /ɑː/ here.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Similar to Vietnamese "o" but shorter and more open. Vietnamese "o" is longer and more rounded. Do not hold the English /ɒ/.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /ɒ/ with /oʊ/ (the diphthong in "go") — saying "fohssil" instead of "fossil". Keep it short and open.

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "hot" — your lips should be slightly rounded but your jaw should be open. The sound is very short — do not glide into /ʊ/ at the end.

Drill Words — Environment Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Môi trường

fossil /ˈfɒs.əl/ remains of ancient organisms / hóa thạch; nhiên liệu hóa thạch
ecology /ɪˈkɒl.ə.dʒi/ the study of organisms and their environment / sinh thái học
toxic /ˈtɒk.sɪk/ poisonous / độc hại

Block 5 · Record & Self-Assess

Khối 5 · Ghi âm & Tự đánh giá

Record & Self-Assess

Ghi âm bản thân và tự đánh giá theo rubric

Reading Passage — Environment · Session 02

Đoạn đọc — Môi trường · Buổi 02 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)

The destruction of natural habitats and the burning of fossil fuels are the two greatest drivers of environmental damage. Rising carbon emissions are accelerating climate change, threatening biodiversity and causing catastrophic floods and droughts. Pollution of rivers and oceans with toxic waste is destroying marine ecology. Governments must invest in renewable energy and enforce strict regulations to prevent further deforestation and protect our planet's ecosystems.

Listen to the model reading, then record yourself. Play back and complete the self-assessment rubric.

Nghe bản đọc mẫu, sau đó tự ghi âm. Nghe lại và điền vào bảng tự đánh giá.
