Understand the Sounds
Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu
Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.
Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.
DRESS vowel — "bed" sound
Nguyên âm /e/ — như trong "epidemic", "health", "mental"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is in the mid-front position. Lips are slightly spread. Jaw is half-open. It is a short, pure vowel — do not glide.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Similar to Vietnamese "ê" but slightly more open. Vietnamese speakers often make it too closed, producing /eɪ/ instead of a pure /e/.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Gliding the vowel — saying "heylth" instead of "health". Or closing too much — saying "hilt" instead of "health".
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "bed" — your tongue should be mid-front and your jaw half-open. The sound should be flat and short — no upward glide at the end.

GOOSE vowel — "food" sound
Nguyên âm /uː/ — như trong "immune", "nutrition", "flu"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is high and back. Lips are tightly rounded. It is a long vowel — hold it for two beats. The lips should protrude slightly.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Similar to Vietnamese "u" but longer and with tighter lip rounding. Vietnamese speakers often make it too short or not round enough.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Shortening /uː/ to /ʊ/ — saying "immune" with a short "u". Or not rounding the lips enough — the sound becomes too central.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "food" — your lips should be tightly rounded and protruding. Hold the sound for two full beats. If your lips are not rounded, the sound is wrong.

FOOT vowel — "good" sound
Nguyên âm /ʊ/ — như trong "good", "should", "could"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue is high and back but less tense than /uː/. Lips are rounded but not as tightly. It is a short vowel.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
No direct equivalent. Vietnamese "u" is always /uː/. The English /ʊ/ is shorter and more relaxed — the key distinction from /uː/.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Replacing /ʊ/ with /uː/ — saying "food" instead of "foot". This is a very common error that changes the meaning of words.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "good" — your lips should be rounded but relaxed, not tightly pursed. The sound is very short. Compare with "food" — feel the difference in tension.

S vs SH — "sedentary" vs "chronic"
Phụ âm /s/ và /ʃ/ — "sedentary" vs "chronic", "stigma"
How to produce /s/
Cách tạo âm /s/
Tongue tip is near (but not touching) the upper teeth ridge. Air flows through a narrow channel. Lips are spread. A sharp, hissing sound.
How to produce /ʃ/
Cách tạo âm /ʃ/
Tongue is further back than for /s/. Lips are rounded and protruding. Air flows through a wider channel. A softer, hushing sound.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Confusing /s/ and /ʃ/ — saying "she" instead of "see". In health vocabulary: "stigma" /s/ vs "physician" /ʃ/. The lip position is the key difference.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
For /s/: lips spread, tongue forward. For /ʃ/: lips rounded, tongue back. Say "sea" then "she" — feel the difference in lip position.

Reading Passage — Health · Session 04
Đoạn đọc — Sức khỏe · Buổi 04 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)
The growing epidemic of sedentary lifestyles is contributing to a rise in chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Mental health is equally important, yet the stigma surrounding mental illness prevents many from seeking help. Quality healthcare remains inaccessible to millions, particularly in low-income countries where preventable diseases continue to claim lives. Governments must invest in nutrition, immune system research, and wellbeing programmes to address these challenges effectively.
