Understand the Sounds
Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu
Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.
Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.
W consonant — "work" sound
Phụ âm /w/ — như trong "work", "workforce", "wage"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Lips are tightly rounded as if about to say /uː/. Then quickly open and spread the lips as you produce the following vowel. No teeth involved.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese "v" is often used instead of /w/. But /w/ is a glide — no friction, no teeth. Vietnamese "v" involves the upper teeth touching the lower lip.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Saying "vork" instead of "work" — using /v/ instead of /w/. The /w/ sound has no friction; the /v/ sound does. This is a very common error for Vietnamese speakers.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "work" — your upper teeth should never touch your lower lip. If you feel teeth-lip contact, you are producing /v/ instead of /w/.

V consonant — "vocational" sound
Phụ âm /v/ — như trong "vocational", "value", "involve"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Upper teeth touch the inner surface of the lower lip. Air is forced through, creating friction. Voice is on — your throat vibrates.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese "v" is similar but often produced with less friction. The English /v/ requires clear teeth-lip contact and strong airflow.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Replacing /v/ with /b/ — saying "bery" instead of "very". Or using /w/ — saying "wocational" instead of "vocational".
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "very" — feel your upper teeth touching your lower lip. Place your hand on your throat — you should feel vibration. If not, you are producing /f/ instead.

What is word stress?
Trọng âm từ là gì?
In English, one syllable in each word is stressed — it is louder, longer, and higher in pitch than the others. Unstressed syllables reduce to /ə/.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese is a tonal language — every syllable carries a tone. English stress is different: only one syllable is prominent, and the others are reduced.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Stressing every syllable equally — "re-MU-ne-RA-tion" instead of "re-myu-ne-RAY-shun". Or stressing the wrong syllable — "RE-dundancy" instead of "re-DUN-dancy".
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Tap your finger on the table for each syllable. The stressed syllable should get a harder tap. Listen to the model audio and match the rhythm.

R consonant — "remuneration" sound
Phụ âm /r/ — như trong "redundancy", "remuneration", "recruit"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Tongue tip is raised and curled back slightly — it does NOT touch the roof of the mouth. Lips are slightly rounded. No trill — it is a smooth approximant.
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese "r" varies by region — some use a trill, some use a fricative. The English /r/ is neither — it is a smooth glide with the tongue curled back.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Trilling the /r/ — using a rolled "r" as in Spanish or Vietnamese. Or using a fricative "r" — the English /r/ should be smooth with no friction.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "red" — your tongue should curl back slightly but never touch the roof of your mouth. If you hear a trill or friction, adjust the tongue position.

Reading Passage — Work · Session 05
Đoạn đọc — Công việc · Buổi 05 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)
The modern workforce faces unprecedented challenges. Mass redundancies driven by automation are displacing workers across many industries, while the gap between executive remuneration and ordinary wages continues to widen. Vocational training programmes offer valuable alternatives to university education, helping workers develop practical skills. Improving employee wellbeing and productivity requires organisations to invest in their people and recognise the value of a motivated and resilient workforce.
