Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu

P vs B — voiceless vs voiced bilabials
Phụ âm /p/ và /b/ — vô thanh và hữu thanh
How to produce /p/
Cách tạo âm /p/
Both lips press together, then release with a puff of air. No voice — throat does not vibrate. At the start of a stressed syllable, there is a strong aspiration: /pʰ/.
How to produce /b/
Cách tạo âm /b/
Both lips press together, then release. Voice is on — throat vibrates. No aspiration — the release is softer than /p/. At the end of words, /b/ is often barely released.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Confusing /p/ and /b/ — saying "ban" instead of "pan". Or not aspirating /p/ at the start of stressed syllables — "public" should have a strong puff of air on the first syllable.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Hold a piece of paper in front of your mouth. Say "public" — the paper should move strongly on the /p/. Say "bus" — the paper should barely move. Feel throat vibration for /b/ only.

F consonant — "infrastructure" sound
Phụ âm /f/ — như trong "infrastructure", "traffic", "fossil"
How to produce
Cách tạo âm
Upper teeth touch the inner surface of the lower lip. Air is forced through, creating friction. No voice — throat does not vibrate. Contrast with /v/ (voiced).
vs. Vietnamese
So với tiếng Việt
Vietnamese "ph" is similar to /f/. However, Vietnamese speakers sometimes use /p/ instead of /f/ — saying "paffic" instead of "traffic". The teeth-lip contact is essential.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Replacing /f/ with /p/ — saying "paffic" instead of "traffic". Or using /v/ — saying "vossil" instead of "fossil". The key is teeth-lip contact with no voice.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Say "traffic" — feel your upper teeth touching your lower lip. Place your hand on your throat — you should feel no vibration. If you feel vibration, you are producing /v/.

Connected Speech — Linking & Elision
Lời nói liên tục — Nối âm và lược âm
What is linking?
Nối âm là gì?
In natural speech, words are not pronounced separately — they are linked together. When a word ends in a consonant and the next begins with a vowel, they link: "public_areas" → "publi-careas".
What is elision?
Lược âm là gì?
Some sounds are dropped in fast speech. "Next stop" → "nex' stop". "Last bus" → "las' bus". This is normal and natural — not lazy pronunciation.
Common errors
Lỗi hay gặp
Pronouncing every word separately with a pause between them — "public | areas" instead of "public_areas". This sounds unnatural and robotic to native speakers.
Self-check tip
Mẹo tự kiểm tra
Listen to the model audio and count the words. If you can hear clear gaps between every word, the speaker is not using connected speech. Aim for smooth, flowing speech.
Linking Examples — Cities & Transport
Ví dụ nối âm — Đô thị & Giao thông
"public_areas" → linked: /ˈpʌb.lɪ.keər.i.əz/
Khu vực công cộng — nối âm /k/ với /eər/
"urban_areas" → linked: /ˈɜː.bə.neər.i.əz/
Khu vực đô thị — nối âm /n/ với /eər/

Reading Passage — Cities & Transport · Session 07
Đoạn đọc — Đô thị & Giao thông · Buổi 07 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)
Rapid urbanisation is one of the defining trends of the 21st century. As populations migrate from rural areas to cities, public transport systems face enormous pressure. Traffic congestion and pollution are becoming increasingly severe in many megacities. Pedestrianising city centres and investing in affordable public transport can help create more liveable urban environments. Without sustained investment in transport infrastructure, cities will struggle to accommodate their growing populations sustainably.
