Khối 2 · Hiểu cách phát âm

Understand the Sounds

Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu

Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.

Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.

/ʒ/

MEASURE consonant — voiced "zh" sound

Phụ âm /ʒ/ — âm "zh" có tiếng như trong "measure", "vision"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Tongue is behind the upper teeth ridge. Lips are slightly rounded. Air flows through creating friction. Voice is on — throat vibrates. Like /ʃ/ but voiced.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

No direct equivalent. Vietnamese "gi" is similar but different. The English /ʒ/ requires clear friction with the tongue behind the teeth ridge.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /ʒ/ with /ʃ/ (voiceless) — saying "meashure" instead of "measure". Or using /dʒ/ — saying "meajure" instead of "measure".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Place your hand on your throat. Say "measure" — you should feel vibration throughout. If you don't feel vibration, you are producing /ʃ/ instead.

Drill Words — Society & Family Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Xã hội & Gia đình

measure /ˈmeʒ.ə/ to assess the size or amount of something / đo lường, đánh giá
vision /ˈvɪʒ.ən/ the ability to see; a plan for the future / tầm nhìn; khả năng nhìn
cohesion /kəʊˈhiː.ʒən/ the action of forming a united whole / sự gắn kết, đoàn kết
/dʒ/

JUDGE consonant — voiced "j" sound

Phụ âm /dʒ/ — âm "j" có tiếng như trong "integration", "marginalised"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Tongue tip touches the upper teeth ridge, then releases with friction. It is an affricate — a stop followed by a fricative. Voice is on.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese "gi" is similar but softer. The English /dʒ/ has a stronger stop component at the beginning — feel the tongue pressing against the ridge.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /dʒ/ with /ʒ/ — saying "meajure" instead of "major". Or using /j/ (as in "yes") — saying "yudge" instead of "judge".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "judge" — feel your tongue press against the ridge, then release. The sound should have a clear stop-then-friction quality. If it's only friction, it's /ʒ/.

Drill Words — Society & Family Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Xã hội & Gia đình

integration /ˌɪn.tɪˈɡreɪ.ʃən/ the process of combining into a whole / sự hội nhập, tích hợp
marginalised /ˈmɑː.dʒɪ.nə.laɪzd/ excluded from mainstream society / bị gạt ra ngoài lề xã hội
majority /məˈdʒɒr.ɪ.ti/ the greater number or part / đa số, phần lớn
/tʃ/

CHURCH consonant — voiceless "ch" sound

Phụ âm /tʃ/ — âm "ch" vô thanh như trong "children", "achieve"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Like /dʒ/ but voiceless — no throat vibration. Tongue tip touches the upper teeth ridge, then releases with friction. Lips are slightly rounded.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese "ch" is similar but often softer. The English /tʃ/ has a stronger stop at the beginning. The key distinction from /dʒ/ is the absence of voice.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /tʃ/ with /dʒ/ — saying "jildren" instead of "children". Or using /ʃ/ — saying "shildren" instead of "children".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "church" — place your hand on your throat. You should feel no vibration. If you feel vibration, you are producing /dʒ/ instead of /tʃ/.

Drill Words — Society & Family Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Xã hội & Gia đình

children /ˈtʃɪl.drən/ young people; sons and daughters / trẻ em; con cái
achieve /əˈtʃiːv/ to successfully reach a goal / đạt được mục tiêu
challenge /ˈtʃæl.ɪndʒ/ a difficult task or situation / thách thức, khó khăn
RHYTHM

Sentence Stress & Rhythm

Nhấn câu và nhịp điệu — nền tảng của tiếng Anh tự nhiên

What is sentence stress?

Nhấn câu là gì?

In English, content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) are stressed. Function words (articles, prepositions, pronouns) are reduced and unstressed.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese gives equal weight to every syllable. English has a stress-timed rhythm — stressed syllables occur at regular intervals, regardless of the number of unstressed syllables between them.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Stressing every word equally — "THE FAMILY IS THE BASIC UNIT OF SOCIETY" instead of "the FAMily is the BAsic UNIT of soCI-ety". This sounds robotic and unnatural.

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Record yourself and listen back. If every word sounds equally loud, you need to reduce the function words. Stressed words should stand out clearly.

Sentence Stress Examples (STRESSED words in CAPS)

Ví dụ nhấn câu (từ được NHẤN viết HOA)

"the FAMily is the BAsic UNIT of SOciety"

Record & Self-Assess

Ghi âm bản thân và tự đánh giá theo rubric

Reading Passage — Society & Family · Session 06

Đoạn đọc — Xã hội & Gia đình · Buổi 06 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)

The challenge of building a cohesive society is one of the defining issues of our time. Growing income inequality and declining social mobility have left many communities feeling marginalised and excluded. Successful integration of immigrant communities requires investment in language education and cultural exchange. The vision of a just society demands that we measure progress not only by economic growth but by the wellbeing of all children and families. High recidivism rates remind us that punishment alone cannot achieve lasting social change.

Listen to the model reading, then record yourself. Play back and complete the self-assessment rubric.

Nghe bản đọc mẫu, sau đó tự ghi âm. Nghe lại và điền vào bảng tự đánh giá.
