Khối 2 · Hiểu cách phát âm

Understand the Sounds

Tìm hiểu cách tạo ra từng âm mục tiêu

Study how each target sound is produced, how it differs from Vietnamese, and what mistakes to avoid.

Học cách tạo ra từng âm, sự khác biệt so với tiếng Việt, và những lỗi cần tránh.

/l/

L consonant — "globalisation" sound

Phụ âm /l/ — như trong "globalisation", "cultural", "local"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Tongue tip touches the upper teeth ridge. Air flows around the sides of the tongue. Voice is on. There are two /l/ sounds: clear /l/ (before vowels: "local") and dark /l/ (after vowels: "global").

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese "l" is similar to the clear /l/. The dark /l/ (at the end of syllables) is different — the back of the tongue rises toward the soft palate, creating a darker sound.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /l/ with /r/ — saying "groba-risation" instead of "globalisation". Or using a clear /l/ where a dark /l/ is needed — "globaw" instead of "global".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "local" — the first /l/ is clear (tongue tip up, back of tongue flat). Say "global" — the final /l/ is dark (tongue tip up, back of tongue raised). Feel the difference.

Drill Words — Culture & Globalisation Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Văn hóa & Toàn cầu hóa

globalisation /ˌɡləʊ.bəl.aɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/ the process of international integration / toàn cầu hóa
cultural /ˈkʌl.tʃər.əl/ relating to culture / thuộc về văn hóa
multilingual /ˌmʌl.tiˈlɪŋ.ɡwəl/ able to speak several languages / đa ngôn ngữ
/j/

Y consonant — "yet" sound

Phụ âm /j/ — như trong "yet", "universal", "cultural"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Tongue is high and forward, close to the hard palate. Air flows through a narrow gap. Voice is on. It is a glide — no friction, no stop. Like the start of /iː/ but moving quickly to the next vowel.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Similar to Vietnamese "y" in "yêu". The English /j/ is a smooth glide — do not add friction. It appears in words spelled with "y" (yet), "u" (universal), and "ew" (new).

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Replacing /j/ with /dʒ/ — saying "djuniversal" instead of "universal". Or dropping /j/ entirely — saying "noo" instead of "new" /njuː/.

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Say "yes" — your tongue should be high and forward, then quickly move to the /e/ vowel. There should be no friction or stop — just a smooth glide.

Drill Words — Culture & Globalisation Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Văn hóa & Toàn cầu hóa

universal /ˌjuː.nɪˈvɜː.səl/ applicable to all cases / phổ quát, toàn cầu
yet /jet/ up until now; nevertheless / vẫn chưa; tuy nhiên
unique /juːˈniːk/ being the only one of its kind / độc đáo, duy nhất
/h/

H consonant — "heritage" sound

Phụ âm /h/ — như trong "heritage", "homogenisation", "host"

How to produce

Cách tạo âm

Air is pushed through the open glottis (the space between the vocal cords). No tongue or lip movement. No voice. It is a voiceless glottal fricative — like a gentle breath before a vowel.

vs. Vietnamese

So với tiếng Việt

Vietnamese "h" is similar. The key difference is that English /h/ is always pronounced at the start of words (unlike French, where "h" is often silent). Never drop the /h/ in English.

Common errors

Lỗi hay gặp

Dropping /h/ — saying "eritage" instead of "heritage". Or adding too much friction — the /h/ should be a gentle breath, not a harsh sound like the Vietnamese "kh".

Self-check tip

Mẹo tự kiểm tra

Hold your hand in front of your mouth. Say "heritage" — you should feel a gentle puff of warm air on the /h/. If you feel no air, you are dropping the /h/.

Drill Words — Culture & Globalisation Topic

Từ luyện tập — Chủ đề Văn hóa & Toàn cầu hóa

heritage /ˈher.ɪ.tɪdʒ/ valued qualities passed down from previous generations / di sản văn hóa
homogenisation /həˌmɒdʒ.ɪ.naɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/ the process of making things uniform / sự đồng nhất hóa văn hóa
host /həʊst/ a country that receives visitors or immigrants / nước chủ nhà, nước tiếp nhận

Final Reading Passage — Culture & Globalisation · Session 10

Đoạn đọc cuối khóa — Văn hóa & Toàn cầu hóa · Buổi 10 (từ tô màu = âm mục tiêu)

Globalisation has transformed the world in profound ways. While it has created new economic opportunities and facilitated cultural exchange, it has also accelerated the homogenisation of cultures, threatening the survival of local traditions and languages. The heritage of indigenous communities is particularly vulnerable, as forced assimilation policies have historically caused immeasurable harm. English has become the global lingua franca, enabling communication across linguistic boundaries, yet its dominance risks marginalising speakers of other languages. A truly cosmopolitan world must celebrate cultural diversity while fostering universal human rights and values.
